Many might people think that traveling with homemade baby food
is a hassle. But it doesn't have to be as long as you plan
everything beforehand. Puree desired foods in a blender or food
processor and freeze the puree in ice cube trays. Once set, pop
out the frozen food cubes and transfer to a plastic freezer bag
(you can also vacuum seal food cubes).
Take along a small
cooler packed with the number of frozen food cubes you will need
. Arrange the cooler with ice packs to keep it cold. Your frozen
food cubes should be okay for up to 8 hours.
If you are taking food to prepare, do all the dicing and
peeling before you leave the house. Pick fruits that are just
about ripe to prevent them from going bad. Manual food mills are
great for preparing foods on the go. If you need diary products,
purchase them at your destination as they require refrigeration.
If you are going on a weekend trip, you many not have to rely
on commercial baby food at all. If you are going somewhere for
an extended stay, your baby can still enjoy homemade baby food
with the right tools. If you are traveling outside the United
States, certain food items may not be permitted across the
borders to other countries. Please check with customs before you
go.
If you want to serve warm meals and are traveling in the car,
I would recommend getting a car bottle warmer. It has a plastic
sleeve that wraps around a bottle or jar, and plugs right into
the cigarette lighter adapter. It is a good idea to serve some
meals at room temperature so your baby can get used to eating
food that is unheated in the event you can't serve it hot.
Pureed food cubes can be thawed and heated if with appliances
if they are available. If you go camping, (like we do) you can
thaw food cubes over a camp fire or gas stove. All you need to
do is place the food cubes in a plastic bag or containers. If
appliances are not available, soak the bag/container into warm
water (not hot) until thawed.
I would recommend taking a few jars of commercial baby food
in case of emergencies. There is nothing wrong with
supplementing in the event you need to.
